Eel Lake Oyster Farms
Yet another gorgeous day on the South Shore, this time up at Eel Lake Oyster Farms off of route 3, in Ste. Anne du Ruisseau. The Outreach Program was set up to help with the Open House the Oyster Farm was hosting, where people could stop by, try some oysters, see the sites and facilities and how they farm them, and meet their local Aquaculturists! Nolan D’Eon had been kind enough to provide us with a spot and the day went smoothly from there. There was a great turnout, with people coming and going almost constantly during the day. With over a hundred people stopping by our tent alone, it was a huge success. We had a chance to talk to people about the other kinds of Aquaculture out there as well as offering up samples of smoked Halibut (from the Scotian Halibut farm in Woods Harbour and smoked by Comeau Seafoods). But the show belonged to the Oysters, and they were offering up some extraordinary dishes. Not only did they have the traditional Oyster on the half-shell with the option of some hot sauce (although a favourite of mine), they also had grated frozen cucumber, which gave the oyster a refreshing zip. As well, they had broiled oysters with Brie Cheese and Bacon, which were to die for. They showed us how they harvested the Oyster seed with small plastic discs encased in concrete, which would be placed into the lake, and the Oyster seed would settle on the concrete, then it could be scraped or jarred off, and placed in an Oyster tray to grow. Too cool. Really wonderful weekend on the South Shore, looking forward to going up to Whycocomagh this Thursday.
