Yarmouth Seafest - Part 2
After another full day’s work for the Outreach program here at the Yarmouth Seafest, we are relaxing and enjoying the fireworks of the Annual “Parade of Lights” where the locals deck their ships out with coloured lights and sail them around the harbour, some of the larger fishing vessels make quite a sight! We began in the morning and once the people started coming through, it was a steady flow till we finally packed up in the afternoon. Ran into Sherman d’Entremont of Ocean Trout Farms who was at the festival with his family, we will see him again in a week when we travel up to Waycobah First Nations to do an event at the newly opened trout farm and hatchery up there. We had some great questions and support for Aquaculture from a lot of the folks who came out to see us today. Quite a few people expressed their hopes for the jobs that Aquaculture could bring, and particularly the new leases going in St. Mary’s Bay and potentially near Shelburne. We had a little under 600 people come by the booth, and the weather was perfect for the festivities. We were set up next to a few tables where they had fisheries and aquaculture related demonstrations, such as Haddock Filleting, Lobster Banding and shucking, net and rigging mending, Lobster trap creation, as well as Oyster shucking done by none other than local Aquaculturist Nolan D’Eon, of Eel Lake Oyster Farms (Where we will be visiting tomorrow for an open house!). I tried one of the shucked oysters (it was fantastic) and there was Scallop shucking later on as well (also delicious). We met a man who said he was involved with making the Oyster Trays used to farm Oysters up in Wedgeport a number of years back (although he said they were slightly different from the one we had on display). Also a retired Department of Fisheries worker stopped by to see how we were doing. After we packed up, we scooted up to Eel Lake Oyster Farms to set up for tomorrow’s open house. Should be a lot of fun, and we had quite a few people saying they were going to stop by the Oyster farm when we told them about it at the booth. Hope the weather stays this nice.
